1934- Handleman Company was founded as a distributor of drug sundries by Philip Handleman and his four sons. 1940- Expanded into Supermarket HBA 1952- Canadian operation was established. 1953- We established a music distribution business, coinciding with the emergence of a new phenomenon called "rock 'n' roll." 1963- Handleman went public, with an offering of 330,000 shares of stock on the over-the-counter market. 1967- Handleman was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. 1974- Developed the Retail Inventory Management Systems (RIMS) 1975- Transitioned into the Book Distribution Business 1983- Transitioned into the Software Distribution Business 1985- Pioneered Video Sell-through Business 1991- Six years after having purchased the inventory and fixtures of Pickwick, Inc., we acquired industry giants Lieberman Company and Sight & Sound, America's second and third largest "rackjobbers." We had now solidified our position as North America's premier distributor and merchandiser of music product. 1992- Sales exceeded $1 billion. 1994- International business was established, starting in Mexico. Canada operations became part of our International division. 1994- We established North Coast Entertainment, owner and licenser of proprietary music, video and computer software products. 1995- First Automated Distribution Center Opened -International Business expanded to Brazil and Argentina 1997- Created First Customer Team for Category Management 1998- We embarked on a major strategic refocusing of our business that includes:
1999- New Business Model: “Channel of Choice” Launched- “Channel of Choice” is about serving our customers better than they can do themselves; making Handleman the link between music vendors and mass merchant customers. To do this, we aligned resources to work closely with our vendors and mass merchant customers at both a local and a national level. -Acquired Lifetime Entertainment and expanded into the United Kingdom. 2000- New Business Development Department Created. -Awarded 250 ASDA stores in the United Kingdom (a member of the Wal-Mart family) 2001- Expanded Channel of Choice to the United Kingdom and Canada -Madacy Entertainment partnered with Coty’s “The Healing Garden” for Therapeutic Music CD’s. -North Coast Entertainment established Anchor Bay Entertainment UK Limited, expanding Anchor Bay’s business model into the United Kingdom. -Lifetime Entertainment changed their name to Handleman UK Limited. - Added Best Buy to customer base 2002- Listed in Fortune 1000 and grouped in the “Diversified Wholesaler Category”
2003- Sold Madacy Entertainment and Anchor Bay Entertainment in order to focus on the company's core competencies of category management and distribution of audio products. 2003 - Recognized as one of "Metropolitan Detroit's 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For" by the Michigan Business & Professional Association (MBPA) for the second consecutive year. - Elite Award Winner for Diversity & Multiculturalism by the Michigan Business & Professional Association (MBPA). - Named one of the top 30 "Best Places to Work in Southeast Michigan" by Crain's Detroit Business. - Recognized by Information Week as an industry leader for innovative use of technology among the distribution sector with a rank of 104 out of 500 companies. 2002- Awarded the 2002 Large Wholesaler of the Year Award by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM). 2002– Named to Information Week 500 among top companies recognized for Innovative Use of Technology. 2002- Rated 101 Best Places to Work in Metropolitan Detroit. 2002- Anchor Bay honored with Special Achievement Saturn Award from The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. 2002- Anchor Bay awarded Best Packaging at the 5th Annual DVD Awards. 2002- Named to Forbes’ “Platinum 400” in January 2002 2002- Listed in Fortune 1000 and grouped in the “Diversified Wholesaler Category”
